NICHOLAS HERRERA
Nicholas Herrera, a celebrated outsider folk artist and modern Santero, is a 15th generation New Mexican whose relatives were among the early Spanish settlers in northern New Mexico. Herrera’s retablos and bultos are made from wood and recycled metal and depict icons from his Catholic faith that are often connected with the hardships of minorities and rural life, which Herrera has personally overcome through his art. Nicholas’ artistic abilities are diverse and each piece speaks of a spiritual nature that transcends traditional religion.
In some of his work he carves edgy, comic, satirical pieces that reflect contemporary realities and uses his strong cultural heritage to address current social and political issues. Nicholas has many life accomplishments with worldwide recognition. His art is featured in the permanent collections of more than 40 museums worldwide, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
