Santa Fe is bustling with summer activities and artistic energy! The gallery’s Summer Salon promises a vibrant showcase of diverse artworks, complemented by a series of engaging events such as artist talks, studio visits, and demonstrations. This creates an excellent opportunity for art enthusiasts to connect with the artists, understand their creative processes, and gain insight into their inspirations.
Moreover, the achievements of several artists are being highlighted across various museums in New Mexico this year. Thomas Vigil and Patrick McGrath Muñiz are featured in the exhibition The Ugly History of Beautiful Things at the Nuevo Mexicano Heritage Art Museum in Santa Fe. Esha Chiocchio’s photography can be viewed at the Roswell Museum as part of the group show Regenerative Actions. Irene Hardwicke Olivieri and Patrick McGrath Muñiz are showcased in Vivarium: Exploring Intersections of Art, Storytelling, and the Resilience of the Living World at the Albuquerque Museum. Additionally, Nicholas Herrera’s artwork is part of Common Ground: Art in New Mexico at the Albuquerque Museum, leading up to a major solo exhibition at the Harwood Museum in Taos this fall, followed by another solo exhibition at Evoke.
For those interested in art and culture, Santa Fe and its surrounding areas seem to be the place to be this summer. Whether attending exhibitions at the gallery or exploring the museum shows across the state, there’s plenty to celebrate and appreciate about the artistic community in New Mexico.

After a particularly warm summer, we applaud the cooler days of fall and a raft of new shows featuring popular artists who never disappoint. West Virginia artist Lynn Boggess has produced luscious and tactile new paintings for his new show, Nature’s Go-Between; in this issue of Evokation we interview him about how he got started painting. In her Restoring Earth’s Canvas: Lordsburg Project, Esha Chiocchio presents stunning photographs of the landscape around Lordsburg, New Mexico, and the heroic efforts by a dedicated group of individuals and agencies to reclaim these grasslands from the desert.
Thomas Vigil shows a new body of work, Lost Prophets, based on his graffiti-inspired art, which continues to push boundaries—his own and others’. In his own new show, Retablos, Patrick McGrath Muñiz uses that traditional genre to pay homage to the archetypal imagery of the tarot, always with piercing visual commentary on issues of social justice. Aron Weisenfeld’s ethereal and provocative paintings find magic and enchantment in modern settings, as his exhibition, Past Lives, reveals.
In this issue we also introduce you to two good friends of Evoke, gallerists Frank Rose and Jared Antonio-Justo Trujillo, who are creating spaces for new voices while making art accessible and exciting for new audiences.
Finally, we are delighted to welcome our new Railyard neighbor, the Vladem Contemporary, the new branch of the New Mexico Museum of Art. In this issue we profile Christian Waguespack, curator for both the Vladem and the Museum. With its much-anticipated opening slated for the weekend of September 23, the Vladem cements the Railyard as a nexus for contemporary art in Santa Fe.

What a viewer sees by an artist is nearly always ‘what they do’—exclusively. Evoke will host an exhibition that shares much more this summer. Art in the Making is an exhibition featuring the work and words of sixty artisans, conceptualists, painters, photographers, sculptors and artists of a variety of media. This exhibition came as a result of a recently released book, Art in the Making: Essays by Artists About What They Do, which delves into the creative process through the words of the artists’ themselves. Surprisingly, this is a rare perspective. Artists’ work is more frequently described and critiqued by curators, arts writers and other art professionals such as ourselves. These artists put forth the inspiration, process and thoughts involved in making what they make with essays and excerpts paralleling their artwork throughout the exhibition. This is a generous gift they share with us in this extraordinary exhibition that will be on display for two months. In addition to the essays, there will be supporting events taking place throughout the duration of the show. Contact us to receive updates on all related lectures, demonstrations and performances taking place throughout the summer.

We welcome you to Evoke Contemporary to experience the emotive, meditative world of Francis DiFronzo in an exhibition of new paintings that inspire existential contemplation. From there we embrace the lively, imaginative art of Harriet Yale Russell. Her mixed-media creations express the artist’s responses to current world events such as the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Mid-spring, we immerse the gallery in a lush group exhibition, Flora & Fauna, which looks at the diverse ways in which nature has been an enduring subject for artists since time immemorial.

Reflecting on the first anniversary of Evokation, we have found it to be a deeply enriching project that has provided numerous insights and renewed awareness of the profound enchantments of northern New Mexico. From the wondrous beauty of our distinct landscape and glorious skies, to the limitless cultural events, performing and visual arts, and superb culinary experiences, Santa Fe is a mecca for bliss on all levels. It is not a wonder why discriminating travelers and art aficionados repeatedly return to absorb more of this small city’s charms. Gathering the content for this publication has brought us an even stronger connection to this remarkable place.

This fall Evoke Contemporary presents Oil of Joy, a solo exhibition of the acclaimed art of Louisa McElwain, which will be followed by a premiere event featuring paintings by prestigious Canadian landscape painter David T. Alexander. El Día de los Muertos, a show by modern santero Nicholas Herrera opens in October and the unveiling of an exciting new series of by Andrew Shears is the season’s finale at the gallery.

These spring and summer pages reflect an eclectic and intriguing season of art at EVOKE Contemporary—from the wildly enchanting world of painter Irene Hardwicke Olivieri in her first Santa Fe show, to a compelling exhibition and new book collaboration between artist Alice Leora Briggs and the late journalist Juián Cardona. EVOKE concludes the summer with a refreshing repose in color: the luscious and tactile plein-air paintings of Lynn Boggess.

Our tip of the season—to locals and visitors alike—is a day trip or evening spent at Los Poblanos, an organic lavender farm in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. This top-rated hotel offers an elegantly simple farm experience in which everything is idyllic—from the greeter, a yellow farm cat named Mouse, to the peacocks that accompany you at dinner.

We encourage you to indulge in some of the many summer festivals and performing arts that Santa Fe has to offer, including Indian Market, the Santa Fe Opera, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, and a new favorite—the Exodus Ensemble, a theatrical immersion in an intimate setting.

Welcome to our January 2022 issue of EVOKATION!
Ringing in a new year is always a splendid reason to celebrate with the optimism and potential of new beginnings. We celebrate 2022 with a series of group exhibitions that include inspired work by our renowned artists and introductions to exceptional new creators. Beginning with a compelling display of landscape paintings, followed by a show featuring the use of unusual media, we close our spring season with our much-anticipated nudes show.

In March we invite you to join us at Evoke for the launch of Michael Scott’s new book, Preternatural, and a featured showing of his latest work that parallels the opening of a nearly year-long exhibition at the Cincinnati Museum Center.

A new feature in Evokation, Curators We Love, is an homage to the creative and essential people who work behind the scenes in the art world, researching artists and art as they build and preserve important collections, recognize deserving artists, and bring their works before the public.

Also in these pages you’ll learn how to romance Santa Fe with our tips on the most amorous venues, activities, and indulgences to share with someone special.

Along with the adversity of the past year, we came upon a remarkable crossroads for introspection. This period of pause led us to be grateful for so much—our supportive and devoted collectors and friends; the great fortune to work with immensely talented and inspirational artists; the natural beauty of Santa Fe and New Mexico whose hiking trails nurtured us during these arduous times. In addition, this interruption led us to the launch of Evokation, in which we reveal insider views of the artists featured and events, along with tips and recommendations for navigating our small but culturally robust city.
